![]() ![]() Direct on line starter is obsolete now a days. That's why we need three phase starter to start a three phase induction motor. Starter provide low voltage across the rotor in starting. Subsequently, question is, does a 3 phase motor need a starter? High current will flow throught the rotor can burn the armature winding. The current in each winding is 120 electrical degrees out of phase with the urrent in the other windings. ![]() The most basic 3- phase induction motor has three sets of windings, with each phase connected to a differ- ent set of windings, Figure 16-4. Keeping this in view, how many windings does a 3 phase motor have? What are we hearing as it slows down? No, 3 phase motors are self starting due to a rotationg magnetic field. When run a normal speed and the power is cut and it is slowing down, it sounds and acts like there is a start winding. ![]()
